A Markham condominium is "LEEDing" the way in sustainability and energy conservation.
River Park Condominium, developed by the Markham-based Times Group, achieved a LEED Platinum certification on May 5 with 80 points. It's the first condominium (10-storey-plus building) in Canada to receive the accolade.
Certification is awarded by the Canada Green Building Council. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
The sustainable, environmental design is reflected in the condo's water and energy efficiency.
The building is designed to reduce water usage by 50 per cent compared to typical levels in condominiums. It maximizes energy conservation with heat recovery ventilators, efficient lighting, high-performance windows, and building architecture to generate 54 per cent of energy cost savings compared to conventional buildings.
Municipal buildings in Markham have a LEED Silver certification, while the Pan Am Centre has LEED Gold certification. There are a total of 35 LEED-certified projects in Markham.
River Park Condominium is on 8200 Birchmount Rd.
