It’s the end of an era in Laskay. On Aug. 30, the old Laskay Hall was lifted off its original site on Weston Road and moved to its new location at the King Cultural and Heritage Centre on King Road.

The entire move took about four hours.

The hall was identified earlier last year as being underused. It's closed six months a year because it's too expensive to heat, said parks director Chris Fasciano. It has just six parking spaces and is in poor repair.

The decision to move the hall came after extensive consultation with a number of community groups and organizations, including the King Township Heritage Advisory Committee, Arts Society King (ASK), the King Township Historical Society, the Community Museum Board, the Nobleton Children's Theatre Company and the Laskay Hall Board.

“Moving Laskay Hall will rejuvenate an underused, aging structure,” Mayor Steve Pellegrini said. “Given its current state, lack of adequate parking and other factors, this move will be a win for all the residents of King. It protects the past while planning for the future.”

It's hoped that by spending $300,000 to move the hall to a location with close to 50 parking spots, the building will get a new lease on life and be more heavily used.
