Uber asks City of Regina to rally for ride share service

Uber wants the City of Regina in its corner to bring its ride share service to Saskatchewan.

Last week, it asked the province's two major cities to talk to the province. The provincial government is responsible for legislation surrounding ride sharing, while the cities oversee taxi regulations.

Mayor Michael Fougere confirmed there have been discussions.

"We have talked to the province informally about, 'What are you going to do and how is this going to happen?'" Fougere told the 980 CJME Morning Show. "We think in many ways competition is a good thing. It makes for better service so we'll see what happens."

Fougere said he couldn't say whether Uber would be a hit in Regina, adding it is up to the company to do a market analysis.

"I think it's an expression of the market changing," he said. "We didn't have Uber 10 years ago and they're coming here now perhaps and that means the taxi industry also has to adapt to that new reality."
