YONGE/STEELES CORRIDOR SECONDARY PLAN HEARING SCHEDULED

NRU
Aug. 16, 2017

In an August 4 decision arising from a July 12 pre-hearing conference, board vice-chair Jan de Pencier Seaborn and member Scott Tousaw scheduled a four-week hearing for the first phase of appeals of the City of Vaughan’s Yonge/Steeles Corridor Secondary Plan to begin June 11, 2018.

The secondary plan area is located in the southeasterly corner of Vaughan and is bordered by the City of Markham to the east and the City of Toronto to the south. The purpose of the secondary plan is to provide a framework for intensification of the Yonge/Steeles corridor and to implement planning policies to bring the area into conformity with Vaughan’s new official plan and the provincial Growth Plan.

General issues for the hearing identified in the draft procedural order include the proposed density cap, height and density, parkland and privately owned public space, road network, the office priority area, cost sharing and bonusing.

The city and York Region’s legal counsel requested that the board deal with issues surrounding the cap on residential units before and after the extension of the Yonge Street subway line during phase one of the hearing. The second phase of the hearing would then take place after a decision on the residential unit cap is made.

The board accepted this phased approach and reserved four weeks for the phase one hearing, to begin June 11, 2018.
