Construction has begun on Brampton’s first fully accessible activity hub located in the new Creditview Park.

The city’s first-of-its-kind Creditview Activity Hub will be fully compliant with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disability Act (AODA), including its play structures as well as elements.

The $3.1-million facility is likely to be completed in spring 2018.

“All parks in Brampton adhere to AODA requirements that ask for a certain percentage of park equipment to be accessible,” said Lisa Cox, city’s media co-ordinator of strategic communications. “The Creditview Activity Hub is the first new park to be fully or 100 per cent accessible.”

Located at the junction of Creditview Road and Sandalwood Parkway, Creditview is the second biggest park in Brampton after Chinguacousy Park.

Construction of the 100-acre park began in 2004 and completed in 2005. Since then, the city continued to upgrade it. The activity hub is the latest development at the Creditview Park.

The 85,000-square-foot activity hub will be themed with a watercycle idea and colour-coordinated with educational signage.

Cox said the city has been actively addressing the accessibility of parks for a number of years and committed to ensure an inclusive community that allows people of all ages and abilities to participate actively and independently.

“All new parks and redeveloped parks will be as inclusive as possible,” said Cox.

The activity hub will be accessible for persons with physical, mental, and emotional challenges.

The facility’s elements include: basketball, bounce wall, 4-square and hopscotch, swings for all ages and abilities, junior/senior climbers, slides, sand tables and a sway ship. It will also include shade shelters and umbrellas, accessible benches and picnic tables, seat walls and fully accessible surfacing such as artificial turf, rubberized play areas, concrete and asphalt.

In addition, it will have fully accessible splash pad featuring custom water/spray elements fabricated and airbrushed to follow the watercycle theme.

Its play structures for the very young and older children will be spaced out in a manner that will provide for better safety and supervision.
