Parents and students who expected a Markham high school to open this September are in for a rude shock.

Bill Hogarth Secondary School in the Cornell subdivision will not open for Grade 9 and 10 students this Sept. 5 as originally planned, the York Region District School Board announced Tuesday.

Blaming "an extremely wet spring" that "resulted in delays in construction" the board is now saying students scheduled to attend Bill Hogarth at 100 Donald Sim Ave., will instead start the year at Bur Oak Secondary School at 933 Bur Oak Ave.

"This is not news we were hoping to deliver," according to a message sent to parents and students by Karen Friedman, associate director of schools, and Leslie Johnstone, associate director of learning and working environments for the YRDSB, in an Aug. 8 letter.

The letter stated the board is anticipating the move to Bill Hogarth will occur later in the fall.

“We anticipate the move to the new Bill Hogarth Secondary School will occur in November, but will confirm the schedule for moving in the fall."
