Fourteen last minute applicants have joined the list of those vying to be City Councillor for Ward 6 bringing the number to 32.
The new names signed on today before the 4:30 p.m. deadline for applications.
At 32, the number of applicants has now well surpassed the last time Barrie City Council dealt with an appointment process.
"In 2006, a total of 23 applications were received for the office of Councillor, Ward 3," said Dawn McAlpine, City Clerk.
As a yardstick, the lists in other jurisdictions have been much longer.
"Toronto received 48 applications for the vacancy in the position of Councillor, Ward 44, Scarborough – East. Vaughan received 56 applications for the vacancy in the Local and Regional Councilor position," McAlpine said.
The candidate will be chosen at a special city council meeting on July 10 at 6 p.m. to fill the vacancy left by Michael Prowse who was named the city's CAO.
The successful applicant will serve the remainder of the 2014 - 2018 term of office that ends on November 30, 2018.
"Each candidate will have a maximum of 5 minutes to speak," said McAlpine.
To be eligible for appointment a person must be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years of age; a resident of the City of Barrie; or own or rent property in the City of Barrie (or the spouse of the owner or renter); and not legally prohibited from voting, or from holding municipal office.
Applicants were welcome to submit letters, biographies or related documents to be considered by City Council in support of their candidacy, which will be made available to the public including the media.
The forms must be filed in person so that they can be signed before a Commissioner for Taking Affidavits in Legislative and Court Services.
The current honouraria or base compensation for the position is $31,666.00. Currently, there is a tax-free allowance on one-third of the remuneration paid to the elected Members of Council.
Here is the list of applicants in the order they appear on the city's website:
