Ontario premier headed to China and Vietnam on trade mission

Premier Kathleen Wynne is headed to the Far East on a trade mission.

Wynne will be the first premier in Ontario history to visit Vietnam in an official capacity.

She will lead a trade delegation to Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi at the tail end of her third mission to China since 2014.

“This business mission will build on our productive partnerships with China, while opening up new opportunities for collaboration,” the premier said Tuesday at the Toronto office of Nanoleaf, a green technology company that will participate in the trade trip.

Two-way trade between Ontario and fast-growing Vietnam has tripled to $3 billion annually in the past five years.

In China, Wynne will be in Beijing, Nanjing, Chongqing, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, meeting with business and government officials.

The focus of the two-week trip, which begins Nov. 23, will be on science and technology, medicine and the agri-food sector.

Wynne’s mission will likely be her final trade push before the June 7, 2018 election.

Since taking office in February 2013, she has also visited India, Israel, Japan, South Korea and many U.S. states in a bid to attract investment to the province.
