A Markham woman has had it up to here with the abandoned look of overgrown weeds, grass and untidiness at a corner residential property.

And she wants the City of Markham to do something about it if the homeowner clearly won't.

The lawn at 88 Southdale Dr. in the McCowan Road and Hwy. 7 area is plainly out of control. One look at it reveals the owner of the property hasn't gone near it with a lawn mower in months. A visit to the property on Monday, revealed thick, three-foot-high plants, grass and weeds around the large front lot. Despite a late-model SUV parked in the driveway, a knock on the front door did not bring a response.

"Why should we have to look at their lawn," said a clearly angry Mary Lou Hinds, who lives around the corner from the property.

"It's disgusting. If we can cut our grass, surely they can too," she said.

Hinds has called the city asking that somebody from Markham's parks department come out and cut the grass. She said she's been told "They (the city) are so swamped (with calls) they just can get to it right now."

Nobody was available from the City of Markham to comment as of press time.

Meanwhile, fed-up residents in the Cornell community, who have been complaining about the failure of both the city and homeowners to maintain their properties, have launched an onlineĀ  petition on change.org called Keep Cornell Beautiful.

It had 59 signatures with the goal of reaching 100 Tuesday morning and asks, among other things:

"Are you tired of not being able to take your kids to the park due to overgrown grass and weeds? Are you embarrassed by the eyesore of the unkempt boulevards and medians? Do you find yourself cleaning pesky dandelion from your legs are navigating through the boulevards and parks?"

The petition wants the City of Markham to change its service level of cutting grass in public spaces to start in the first week of May starting in 2018 to keep grass and weeds under control.
