A woman who cut down three trees without a permit on her Markham property last December won't be personally planting 18 replacement trees in their place.

Jialing Wu, who paid a fine of $4,500, or $1,500 for each tree she cut down at 47 Gainsville Avenue in Unionville, was originally given the option of planting 18 trees or paying a fine of $10,800 by May 31 at 4:30 p.m. by the City of Markham.

But it seems all has been forgiven by the City after Wu paid that $4,500 fine and also cut a cheque for $45,000 for the City's Trees for Tomorrow program.

Launched in May 2008, Trees for Tomorrow is aimed at increasing Markham's overall tree canopy. It says it encourages, "implementation throughout community and corporate involvement... to increase planting on private and public properties."
