The much-anticipated Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (Line 1) is coming to our new downtown. Transit in the City of Vaughan is taking a giant leap forward this year with the opening of the subway in December. To celebrate, the City is launching a contest for the chance to win a ride on a VIP preview train that will depart from the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC) Subway Station located just west of Jane Street and Highway 7.

The Passport to Ride contest is easy and fun. To participate, you must first get your passport at any Vaughan community centre, City Hall or in the Fall and Winter Recreation Vaughan guide. The passport is filled with information about the VMC as well as a full subway map. Participants must visit two of the City’s 2017 signature events and get their passport stamped at the VMC tent. Completed passports may be submitted at any signature event or at the Vaughan City Hall information desk, located at 2141 Major Mackenzie Dr. Participants can also join the conversation @VMC_Vaughan and use the hashtag #VMCpassporttoride for a chance to win. Full details can be found at vaughan.ca/contests and MyVMC.ca.

The VMC is the City’s new downtown. It will be a vibrant, modern urban centre for residents and businesses that will include all the amenities of an urban lifestyle from office towers and urban squares to shopping areas and walking and cycling paths. In addition to the subway extension, there is also the vivaNext bus rapidway on Highway 7 and the new SmartCentres Place Bus Terminal, both of which are under construction.

“Welcoming the subway is an exciting and historical moment in our city’s journey to becoming truly world-class. A vibrant downtown has to be one-of-a-kind and truly reflect its people. The VMC is about creating a unique experience for residents - a place where people can live, work and play within the same city core. The opening of the subway extension will continue the transformation we are seeing in the VMC and across our growing city. Mass rapid transit is an investment in our future, one that promises economic prosperity through advancements in business development and quality of life. By connecting Vaughan to surrounding communities, our city is becoming an even more highly sought-after destination in the GTA. I encourage everyone to attend our City events and participate in this fun and exciting opportunity to be one of the first to ride the subway from our new downtown.”
