Hospice Vaughan, which is committed to opening a 10-bed residential hospice facility in 2019, now has the land it's been looking for to open that facility.

The charity organization has signed a lease agreement with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) for use of about 1.1 hectares (2.8 acres) of their land on Islington Avenue, north of Rutherford Road in Vaughan.

The new facility, expected to open in about two years' time, will include 10 beds that will serve more than 200 people annually, which Hospice Vaughan said amounts to about a quarter of those who now die in Vaughan annually.

It will also be able to support enhanced hospice day programs, visiting hospice services, family support bereavement services and facilities to conduct research and educate health-care professionals on palliative care best practices.

"We take pride in not only caring for our watersheds, but also the people who live in them," said Brian Denney, CEO of TRCA said.

"The signing of this lease agreement is an important milestone in our journey to transform end-of-life care in Vaughan," said Maria Castro, president of the board of directors, Hospice Vaughan.
