Aurora council unanimously passed a motion calling on Metrolinx to keep the York University station open.
“We’re talking about improving commute times; at the same time, Metrolinx is considering closing the York University station,” said Coun. Michael Thompson during a recent council meeting.
“It doesn’t make sense.”
The York University GO Station sits southeast of Steeles Avenue and Keele Street, servicing York University and the surrounding businesses.
Thompson is behind a motion to Aurora council calling on Metrolinx to keep the station open amid rumours the transit agency is considering closing it.
No decision has been made on the York University station, said Metrolinx director Nick Spensieri.
There are a number of challenges with the existing station when it comes to doubling the track, he added, including existing private property abutting right up to existing tracks.
Not to mention the new Downsview station opening soon that will connect to the TTC subway line, he added.
But the new station is further south near Sheppard Avenue, making York University students and faculty double back to campus.
While this isn’t an Aurora issue, many York Region youth - Thompson’s daughter included - live at home and commute to school via GO Train services.
