The federal government is investing millions of dollars in the GO regional express rail expansion project, Newmarket-Aurora MP Kyle Peterson has announced.

Ottawa is providing $1.899 billion for the project, he said at the Aurora GO Train station March 31.

More than $595 million of that is earmarked for the Barrie corridor project, which will include construction of 51.2 kilometres of new track and required grading between Aurora and Union stations, four new grade separations, train layover facilities and station modifications.

The GO regional express rail project will eventually bring 15-minute, all-day service from Aurora to Union, 30-minute peak period weekday direction service from Union to Barrie, and 60-minute midway, evening and weekend service between Union and Barrie.

Newmarket-Aurora MPP Chris Ballard and Aurora Mayor Geoff Dawe praised the federal government’s investment.
