Uber will become the public transit alternative in Innisfil starting next month.

The town passed a motion on Wednesday night that will set up Uber for residents with trips to and from main destinations.

Fares will vary between $3 and $5. For example, a trip to a GO bus stop would be $4, while a ride to the Highway 400 carpool lot would be $5.

The town will pay Uber the remainder of the fare, which is expected to cost about $100,000 in the first year.

The town also changed its taxi bylaw. This move will set a maximum rate, but allow companies to set their own rates around that.

The town and Uber are holding a meeting at the IdeaLab and Library from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for anyone interested in becoming an Uber driver.

The service is set to start May 1.
