2016 numbers are in for East Gwillimbury council expenses

Ever wonder how much your local representative makes? The numbers are in for East Gwillimbury council salaries and benefits for 2016.

Mayor Virginia Hackson’s salary was $69,758, plus she received just more than $50,000 from York Region for her work as a regional councillor.

Councillors Marlene Johnston, James Young, Tara Roy-DiClemente and Joe Persechini each earned $43,676.

The mayor received a car allowance of $8,712 while all the councillors received $4,356.

In terms of discretionary expenses, Roy-DiClemente led the way with expenses totalling $1,130, $719 falling under professional development. She was the only member of council who filed any expense for professional development. Persechini filed $441 for expenses. Hackson filed $418. Johnson filed $217.

The only councillor without any expenses to list was Young.

All councillors received more than $10,000 in benefits on top of their salaries, with Roy-DiClemente and Young receiving $13,328. Persechini received $11,251, while Johnston received $8,832. Hackson received $3,670 in benefits.

East Gwillimbury councillors are compensated quite handsomely compared to other municipalities in the northern six.

According to information available on the various town websites, Newmarket led the way with a councillor salary of $48,655 per year, followed by East Gwillimbury at $43,800, Whitchurch-Stouffville at $34,322, Aurora at $28,611, King at $26,123, and Georgina at $25,547.
