Canada's 150th birthday: Numbers tell the story of York Region's future

As Canada celebrates its 150th birthday, demographic information gives us a glimpse of where our community stands today and where we’re headed.
- York’s current population of 1.2 million will grow by more than 50 per cent to 1.79 million in 2041. Most growth will take place in Richmond Hill, Vaughan and Markham, but East Gwillimbury will be the fastest-growing municipality, going from about 25,000 residents today to 95,000 in 2041.
- In 1971, when the region was created, there were fewer than 200,000 residents.
- There were 276,226 children in the region in 2011. That is expected to grow to 323,155 in 2031.
- There were 666,265 adults in 2011, which is anticipated to increase to 865,602 in 2031.
- The number of seniors was 124,734 in 2011, which will balloon to 311,257 in 2031. Those over 85 are forecasted to grow from almost 14,000 in 2011 to more than 30,000 in 2031.
- The population of the Greater Toronto Area will be 13.1 million in 50 years.
- The number of jobs in York Region will grow from 595,200 in 2016 to 900,000 by 2041.
