Slessor Square has a new owner.

The vacant 4.6-acre property located on Yonge Street, across from the Upper Canada Mall, was originally purchased by The Forrest Group and slated for the development of 600 residential units and 96,399 square feet of retail and office space to be constructed in four phases. However, following an unsolicited offer to purchase the land, the company decided to list the property for $13.9 million to see what kind of interest there was from buyers.

“The sale of the property closed months ago,” confirmed Bob Forrest. “I am not at liberty to release any more information due to the agreement that was signed.”

Adrian Cammaert, senior planner for the Town of Newmarket, also confirmed the property has been sold, but said the town has yet to receive any formal site plan applications from the new owner.

Groundswell Urban Planners continue to fine tune the plans for the property and expect to submit a revised application to the town in the next few months, said president Brad Rogers.

While he wasn’t prepared to reveal much about the plans, he did say the new development will be “of similar scale (height and density)” to the previous development plan.
