To celebrate the Jewish tradition, a special menorah-lighting ceremony was held on Dec. 27nd last month at the Garnet A. Williams Community Centre. Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council invited guests to witness the lighting of the fifth candle to mark the fifth night of Hanukkah. Hanukkah lasts eight days from the 25th day of Kislev (in December) and commemorating the rededication of the Temple in 165 BC by the Maccabees after its desecration by the Syrians. It is marked by the successive kindling of eight lights. The community came together to mark this festive ceremony.
