Toronto city councillor Norm Kelly came under fire Saturday when he tweeted an advertisement for a sweatshirt that reads, “I’m moving to Canada,” from his merchandise website.

Many Twitter users responded with disgust and criticism, commenting that the advertisement was in bad taste, poorly timed, and attempting to profit off of American Islamaphobia.

Several people praised and defended Kelly, while others poked fun at the situation in the United States. Some others suggested that he donate the proceeds from the shirt to refugee organizations.

Kelly defended himself by saying that, like all of his merchandise, proceeds from the sales would go to Toronto-based charities, and the next donation would go towards an organization that helps refugees.

The issue of Islamaphobia and xenophobia has come to the forefront of news in the United States since Friday, when President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries from the United States for 90 days, suspending the U.S. Refugee Admissions Programme for 120 days, and banning Syrian refugees from the country indefinitely.

The Toronto Star reached out to Kelly for comment but was unable to reach him.
