Councillors are set to return to discussions on the ongoing Uber saga Tuesday afternoon.
Councillors will take a look at a few high profile issues during the Community and Protective Services Committee meeting, including the latest update on the City’s revamped taxi bylaw that’s meant to incorporate ride sharing services.
They will review options for introducing a camera system for Uber vehicles and proposed fees for both drivers and riders.
Currently, only taxi’s are required to have a camera. Council has taken the position that cameras are not required for Uber vehicles as the driver is already aware of the passenger’s information, including name, address and credit card information. Passengers are also aware of the drivers information through the app.
Council has directions to amend the minimum fare fro Executive Limousines to $10.25 and $9.50 for seniors and students. Cash payment would be prohibited in private vehicles for hire.
The update also includes changes by City Council, including allowing third party police record checks and removing the vehicle entry age for vehicles for hire.
The new bylaw is expected to be in place by the end of March.
The Community and Protective Services Committee starts at 4 p.m. in council chambers.
