That was the message TTC CEO Andy Byford delivered to the transit agency’s board members at a meeting on Jan. 18.
Byford said, while presenting his monthly report to the board, one of his three key priorities is to have the six-stop subway line open in 2017, "which is going to happen."
The next major milestone is to energize tracks by the end of March - which will enable the transit agency to begin testing, commissioning and trial operations, according to the report, which states "the project team maintains good momentum and remains on target for opening in December of this year."
The 8.6 kilometre Toronto-York Spadina subway extension stretches north from the Downsview station to the city’s emerging downtown area known as the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, near Jane Street and Highway 7.
Originally, the subway line was to open in 2015; but, late in 2012, the TTC announced the deadline was being pushed back to the fall of 2016. Then, in 2015, the opening date was delayed to Dec. 31, 2017.
Along with the delays, the estimated cost of the project has ballooned to $3.2 billion, up from the original forecast of $2.6 billion.
