King Township was hammered by traffic chaos this morning after the Region failed to warn motorists it was closing heavily travelled commuter routes.

Traffic was so bad on 16th Sideroad between Dufferin and Keele streets vehicles were stuck for nearly an hour in both directions.

Commuters struggled to find alternates and vehicles backed up to try to find a way around the closed off routes.

The Region of York has closed Lloydtown/Aurora Road from Dufferin Street to Jane Street and Keele Street from Kettleby Road to 17th Sideroad for paving its new roundabout at Keele Street and Lloydtown/Aurora Road junction, according to Andrew Drzewiecki, King Township's director of engineering, public works and building.

The closure caused huge delays this morning as motorists, unaware of the closed-off roads were caught off-guard.

One motorist said she spent half-an-hour stuck in traffic while another motorist said he was stuck for an hour.

King Township was not notified about the closure, Drzewieki said.

It’s not clear, at this time, when the construction will be finished and the intersections will be reopen.
