The Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station, also known as H2 VMC, is well on its way to taking its final diagrid or tortoise shell form! The 150-foot long by 80-foot wide canopy structure will serve TTC and VIVA patrons at road level along the major Highway #7 roadway, just west of Jane Street, in Vaughan, ON.
Last week ENGENICO Structural Engineers was on site monitoring the erection and installation of the first curved side section. The final at form structure will rely upon complete joint penetration welds to 14" diameter x 1/2" thick circular tubes- a process which takes a lot of time. Because of the high costs of having a crane temporarily hold the curved side section during this extensive and lengthy welding procedure, the temporary inverted steel angles are seated on the tubes to support the full 20,000 LB weight! Smaller steel angles are welded to the sides of the tubes to act as "bumpers" or "keepers" for lateral resistance.
All of the curved side sections should be installed by the end of September and they will all be relying on these temporary angles to support the full weight during welding procedures. At this point all supporting steel will be removed and the tortoise shell canopy will be self-supporting! We will keep you posted!
