A South Korean media delegation travelled to Penetanguishene earlier this week to check out an innovative power project.

The Micro Grid project, which was officially launched in June by PowerStream and partner Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), currently provides several hours of backup power supply for about 400 customers in the area. The Micro Grid facility is located adjacent to PowerStream's Robert Street municipal substation.

PowerStream Chair Maurizio Bevilacqua said the Penetanguishene project is a testament to the company's commitment to offer innovative, reliable and sustainable energy solutions to customers in its service territory and beyond.

"We trust that the media representatives from South Korea were able to learn about the endless opportunities that this technology will bring to the global smart energy market," said Bevilacqua, who is also mayor of Vaughan.

In November 2013, PowerStream became one of the first utilities of its size in North America to initiate a proof-of-concept Micro Grid as a demonstration project at the company's head office in Vaughan.

PowerStream is a community-owned energy company that provides power and related services to more than 380,000 residential and business customers in communities located immediately north of Toronto and in central Ontario. It is jointly-owned by the cities of Barrie, Markham and Vaughan.
