'Longest heat wave of summer' prompts another warning for Stouffville residents

Another heat warning has been issued for the Whitchurch-Stouffville area starting Tuesday, Aug. 9.

According to Environment Canada, a hot and humid air mass will return to the area beginning Tuesday afternoon, when temperatures are forecast to reach the low 30s C. Humidex values will slowly rise to the mid-30s C in York Region on Tuesday.

The air mass will become considerably more humid Tuesday night, which will keep overnight temperatures near 20 in most areas. Hot and humid conditions under partly to mostly sunny skies is expected Wednesday through Friday. Humidex values peaking in the upper 30s to low 40s C are expected beginning Wednesday.

Environment Canada says this may be the longest and most significant heat wave of the summer so far.

York Region Public Health advises the public to take extra precautions to stay safe in the heat.

Everyone is at risk from extreme heat, especially older adults, infants and young children, people who work or exercise outdoors and those with certain medical conditions. The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville is encouraging residents to check on family, friends and neighbours who may be isolated or more vulnerable to the heat.

Residents and visitors can cool down at town pools, splash pads, wading pools and designated cooling locations during extreme heat conditions.

Extreme heat can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and even death. Warning signs of heatā€related illness include dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, weakness and confusion. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.
