He called it the “best thing that ever happened to King” but Mayor Steve Pellegrini said it will now take a little longer to happen.

Instead of being constructed by December 2017, the giant new Magna international headquarters at Jane Street and King Road “is delayed by about six months,” and will now be ready by summer 2018, Pellegrini said.

The mayor, who is in close contact with Magna officials, said Friday the company has “submitted its engineering plans and has a new project manager. We’re delighted that they’re going through with this.”

That summer 2018 move-in date was confirmed by Magna's director of corporate communications Tracy Fuerst who confirmed the auto-parts giant is still wrapping up the design and bidding process and "if all goes well," is planning to break ground at the Jane Street-King Road site later this fall.

She said the construction process takes about 18 months.

Magna first broke the news it was moving its global headquarters to King City back in May 2015 after it purchased 105 acres at the corner of King Road and Jane Street.

In June 2015, the international auto parts giant revealed its preliminary designs for a 200,000 square-foot three-storey office on the site. Company officials said at a June 2015 Township council meeting that they would be developing 40 acres of the 105-acre site for an estimated 625 employees.

The Magna complex is expected to include a one-storey 120,000 square-foot research and development building that will house about 35 employees and rise to about 20 metres. The other 80,000 metres will house the rest of the employees.

The complex will also include an underground parking lot, softball diamonds and a pool.

Township councillors raved when Magna made the decision to come to King City last year.

“”It’s the jewel in the crown of King,” said Bill Cober.

“This is just fantastic,” said Cleve Mortelliti.

And Linda Pabst added, “I’ve been on council for 21 years and I have seen a lot of things come and go on King Township and I am so proud to see Magna come here. It’s the highlight for King City and King Township.”
