King Township Monday morning began removing ash trees killed by the emerald ash borer, a beetle that has been the scourge of tens of millions of trees in North America since it was first detected in 2002.

Arbor Tech, the company removing the trees, began the process of cutting down up to 300 dead ash trees starting in Nobleton. The company will be moving on to King City and Schomberg over the next few weeks.

“These trees are completely dead and many are on township-owned boulevards next to sidewalks,” Mayor Steve Pellegrini said.

“While we certainly don’t enjoy cutting down trees, it needs to be done to keep the public safe.”

The company is stacking up cut logs by the side of the road after it takes down the trees. Members of the public who want firewood are welcome to pick up the wood free of charge.
