Who needs Whitchurch in the Whitchurch-Stouffville town name?
That’s what Whitchurch-Stouffville council will be debating at special council meeting on Aug. 2.
Canada Post has requested council pick one town name for the L4A postal code. Town staff have presented council with two options for the primary town name: Whitchurch-Stouffville or Stouffville.
While Whitchurch-Stouffville is the official name of the community, staff said making it the primary municipal mailing name would have some consequences because residents currently living in Stouffville would have to change their addresses to Whitchurch-Stouffville.
Rural residents might find it problematic if the municipal name was Stouffville, staff went on to say, because they don’t identify themselves as living in the town of Stouffville.
Staff said they are in agreement with Canada Post that the transition toward a standardized municipal addressing and postal code is desirable for building a unified municipal identity. It also reduces confusion and the potential for delivery errors.
