A Concord company has been fined $50,000 after a worker was hurt by a falling post.

The worker was dismantling and replacing a steel storage system for Welded Tube of Canada Corporation, at 541 Bowes Rd., March 5, 2014, according to a Ministry of Labour news release. The storage system reportedly consisted of sleeper beams, hollow steel tubes laid out on the ground, along with vertical upright posts that were welded onto the beams.

A worker cut loose an upright support and the ensuing movement of the beams caused the posts to fall, striking a worker who was injured.

The Ministry of Labour, in its investigation of the company, found the sleeper beams were not adequately anchored to prevent their movement. The injured worker has returned to full-time duties.

The fine was imposed by Justice of the Peace Karen Walker in Newmarket court.
