June 8, 2016
June 1 the Province of Ontario passed the new Waste-Free Ontario Act with the goal of increasing waste diversion from landfills, mitigating climate change and creating employment. In particular, the act will require producers to take full responsibility for their products and packaging, lower recycling costs and improve public access to convenient recycling options. The act will also replace Waste Diversion Ontario with the Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority, a new oversight entity with compliance and enforcement powers to oversee new waste diversion programs.
