Saturday turned out to be a gratifying day for Adam Mascherin and Victor Mete.

For Mascherin, a resident of Maple, and Mete, who resides in Woodbridge, they heard their names called out on the First Niagara Center loudspeakers when the National Hockey League conducted their annual entry draft in Buffalo, N.Y., Saturday.

A five-foot, 10-inch, 206-pound forward with the Ontario Hockey League’s Kitchener Rangers, Mascherin, 18, was chosen by the Florida Panthers in the second round and 38th player overall.

Mascherin amassed 35 goals and 46 assists this past season with Kitchener and led them in scoring.

In 2013-14, he was named the Greater Toronto Hockey League Player of the Year - in a season in which he scored more than two points a game and was captain of the Vaughan Kings minor midget AAA team.

With the 100th pick in the draft in the fourth round, the Montreal Canadiens chose the 18-year-old Mete, a five-foot, 10-inch, 174-lb. defenceman, who toiled with the Memorial Cup champion London Knights this past season.

During this past season, the left shooting defenceman recorded eight goals and 30 assists.

He added 11 points, including four goals, during the postseason.

Mete was among four blueliners chosen by the Canadiens in this year’s annual lottery.

In being chosen by the Canadiens, a team he admired while growing up and playing for that namesake, the Toronto Junior Canadiens, at the minor midget level, Mete feels he can bring a specific skill set to the table when his time comes to don the red, white and blue jersey.

“I think I can bring hard work every game, dedication, loyalty and always trying my best,” he said on the Canadiens’ website. “I’m an offensive defenceman, so I try to jump in the rush and be the fourth guy in to create more offense. I also play well in the defensive zone.”
