Cat owners in a southern Ontario city may soon have to leash their felines.
City council in Peterborough, Ont., voted overwhelming Monday night to change the city’s animal bylaws to force owners to leash their cats, or keep them in enclosed yards.
The decision will be up for ratification at the next regular council meeting.
The plan has sparked strong opposition from pet owners, including an online petition at change.org.
City councillors say the bylaw changes will also include an amendment to disallow city residents from owning backyard chickens.
