Oakville council calls for OMB reform

May 6 Oakville council unanimously voted to support a resolution calling for three specific reforms to the Ontario Municipal Board: (1) exclude the board from appeals of amendments to provincially-approved official plans; (2) require the OMB to show deference to decisions of local councils subject only to the test of reasonableness; (3) require the board, as an appellate body, to implement the concept of precedent in its decisions.

Oakville council’s decision comes a week before the Municipal Summit on OMB reform, which will take place in Markham May 14 and bring together more than 140 councillors from 57 Ontario municipalities.
