A veteran American actor, known for roles on the silver screen and the small screen, will be honoured at this year’s Vaughan Film Festival.

William Baldwin is being presented with the 2016 Independent Leadership Award during the annual awards show at Paramount Conference & Event Venue Thursday, May 19.

Baldwin has dozens of film credits to his name, but is arguably best known for starring roles in a slew of movies from the early 1990s including Flatliners, Backdraft and Sliver.

More recently, he’s appeared as a regular on a number of television series including Dirty Sexy Money, Gossip Girl and Parenthood.

But the award is in recognition of the New York native’s “commitment to telling timeless stories within the independent scene,” according to a news release.

Last year, the award went to Michael Madsen, best known as the ear-slicing psychopath Mr. Blonde in Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. Madsen is also a huge supporter of independent films.

The Vaughan Film Festival, which showcases short films from around the world, runs from May 16 to 19 with screenings taking place at Cineplex Colossus Theatres, 3555 Hwy. 7.

The festival’s spring launch - where organizers announce official award nominations for the Golden Reels as well as the winner of the Talking Film contest and more information about this year’s event, takes place April 19 at Vaughan Mills Shopping Centre.

Breakfast Television’s Frank Ferragine, aka Frankie Flowers, serves as host of the kick off event, which gets under way at 7 p.m.
