Tow truck protest plans to cause Toronto rush-hour mayhem
A rolling protest starting at 7:30 a.m. affects all 400-series highways heading towards Toronto, including the DVP and Gardiner.

Commuters are expected to face significant delays on major highways as they head into Toronto Tuesday morning due to a rolling protest staged by over a thousand tow truck operators.

Nearly 1,200 drivers will be gathering at several points around the GTA and will make their way to Queen’s Park during the morning rush hour in protest of Bill 15, which aims to reduce auto insurance claims costs and includes tow-specific measures designed to protect consumers.

The rally is expected to start around 7:30 a.m. and affects all 400-series highways heading towards Toronto, including the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway.

One procession will exit the DVP at Richmond St. and continue along to University Ave. before turning north to Queen’s Park. Another procession will exit the Gardiner at the York/Bay/Yonge Sts. exit, then proceed northbound on University Ave.

According to police, the expected time of arrival is 9:30 a.m. - well past the rush-hour period.

At Queen’s Park, the drivers will stage a protest from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Bill 15 limits the number of hours that operators can work a day, and requires operators to accept credit card payments, clearly display towing rates before accepting payment and get clear permission from drivers before providing towing services.

A similar protest was staged when the bill first passed in 2014, causing significant delays.
