The province may be getting closer to settling on a way to legalize Uber.

La Presse says Transport Minister Jacques Daoust has been rallying caucus support for the idea of temporary permits.

The legislation would oblige drivers for Uber and other on-line ride-hailing services to buy a daily or weekly operating permit. They'd also have to have proper insurance and the kind of driver's license that allows them to carry paying passengers.

La Presse says the taxi industry is worried about how the temporary permits would be issued and policed - and how the issuer would know whether an Uber driver clocks out at the end of the allotted time.

There are indications, however, that a system of daily or weekly permits would be accompanied by hefty fines for violators.
