Despite claims it has no interest in operating in Calgary under the city’s new ride-sharing bylaw, Uber hasn’t given up the fight.

The company has commissioned a survey on the issue, and Uber Alberta GM Ramit Kar said according to the results, 80 per cent of those polled believe the city should continue to make revisions to the bylaw to encourage ride-sharing.

“This is done through Leger, which is a very reputable polling firm, and quite frankly it’s the same pollsters that the city of Calgary uses. These results kind of speak for themselves that Calgarians are really looking for more options and they really aren’t happy with the bylaw that currently stands,” said Kar.

“What the polling also found was that two-thirds of Calgarians find that barriers for new ride-sharing drivers actually doesn’t make sense. Things like short-term and occasional drivers needing to pay hundreds of dollars before they’re even allowed to drive. These are the types of issues that people are taking with the bylaw.”

The sample size for the survey was 501 adults living in Calgary, between March 28 and April 2, only days before the city’s new bylaw came into effect.
