The province is taking the next steps in its plan to expand Highway 427.

The extension would run 6.6 kilometres from Highway 7 to Major Mackenzie Drive.

Transportation minister Steven Del Duca said the province is asking three companies to submit proposals.

“The proposals will also include how the companies will maintain the section of the highway for a 30 year period,” he explained. “The successful proponent will be announced at financial close in early 2017 with construction expected to begin that year.”

The extension is expected to be ready for traffic in 2020.

The proposal also contains 15.5 kilometres of dedicated high-occupancy toll (HOT) lanes.

“The HOT lanes, which will be open by 2021, will be free for carpoolers and will allow single occupant vehicles to use the lanes for a charge,” Del Duca said.

There has been no word on how much single-occupant vehicle drivers would be charged to use the HOT lanes.

The HOT lanes would run south of Highway 409 to north of Rutherford Road.
