We are 5 years away from toll roads in the GTA. The province announced Thursday that it is on track to open new high occupancy toll (HOT) lanes on the 427 in 2021.

The HOT lanes will feature electronic tolling on a 15.5 km stretch of the extension in both directions from south of the 409 to north of Rutherford.

The 427 extension itself will open in 2020 and will see 6.6 km of highway added to the current road from Highway 7 to Major Mackenzie.

The highway will be widened from south of Albion to Highway 7. Construction is expected to begin sometime in 2017.

Solo drivers will be required to pay a toll to get into the HOT lanes, but drivers that are carpooling will be able to get in the lanes for free.

The 427 lanes will be the first to be tolled following an HOT pilot project this summer along the QEW from Trafalgar Road in Oakville to Guelph Line in Burlington.
