Mississauga city council asks Uber to suspend operations

Uber’s rough ride in the GTA continued Wednesday after another city council voted overwhelming to request the company put the brakes on its business.

Mississauga City Council voted unanimously to request a suspension of Uber services while the municipality crafts new laws to govern their operation.

Council raised concern with the “unregulated manner” in which companies like Uber operate, especially with the company’s controversial cheaper service UberX , including specific issues such as insurance, vehicle inspections and driver background checks.

In response to the vote, Uber Canada spokesperson Susie Heath said the company has “been working with officials in Mississauga and across Canada to update rules for ridesharing.”

“We look forward to continuing our work with officials in Mississauga to modernize regulations to encourage innovation, put people first and create safe, reliable and affordable transportation options,” she said.

Brampton city council unanimously approved a similar motion last Wednesday, citing many of the same concerns.
