220 Markham city employees grace 2015 sunshine list

The coveted list of who makes what and how much is out.

The province released the annual ‘sunshine’ list of public sector employees who made more than $100,000 last year.

The list consists of more than 115,000 public sector employees, of which about 220 are employed by the City of Markham.

Ontario’s top dog is Thomas Mitchell, who made more than $1.528 million as the Ontario Power Generation CEO.

Markham’s top employee, CAO Andy Taylor, took home about 17 per cent of Mitchell’s salary, making more than $260,000 in 2015.

The next highest paid employees - development services commissioner Jim Baird, corporate services commissioner Trinela Cane and community and fire services commissioner Brenda Librecz - made more than $207,000 last year.

Markham’s mayor, Frank Scarpitti, made just over $187,000.

Retired Markham fire chief Bill Snowball, trailed behind Scarpitti with over $181,000.

Markham Fire and Emergency Services makes up more than 30 per cent of the city's  top earners, with more than 70 captains, chiefs, fire fighters and officers on the sunshine list.

Also on the list is deputy mayor and Regional Councillor Jack Heath, who made more than $136,000 last year as well as regional councillors Jim Jones, Joe Li and Nirmala Armstrong with more than $129,000.

More than 90 Markham Stouffiville Hospital employees also made the ‘sunshine’ list, with the hospital strategy transformation and administration executive vice-president May Chang taking home more than $313,000.

Former president and CEO Janet Beed made more than $266,000 compared to present hospital president while CEO Jo-anne Marr - who joined the Markham Stouffville team last June - made more than $197,000.
