Halton Region has launched an investigation after a video was posted on Facebook showing a waste collection staff member shoveling snow into a garbage truck.

The woman who spotted the workers outside of her home thought they were doing it because the snow was too far out on the street.

But Jim Harnum, the Halton Commissioner of Public Works, tells insideHalton.com that the region pays the contractor for its services by the ton, and that it appears the incentive was to add weight to the truck.

“It’s absolutely inappropriate and we’ve taken it very seriously,” he said. “We’ve been working with Miller for many years and never had an incident like this.”

But he said this incident is likely not systemic.

“But we think this is an isolated issue,” he noted. “There would have to be dump trucks full of snow going into the transfer station to make a huge effect.”

There’s an unconfirmed report the employee has been fired.

680 NEWS has reached out to the contractor but Miller Waste has yet to return the calls.
