Snapd Vaughan East/Woodbridge
March 2016

The City of Vaughan celebrated Chinese New Year at Vaughan City Hall on Jan. 31st and welcomed in the Year of the Monkey. This was a wonderful celebration for all families there. There were featured cultural performances, refreshments and family fun activities throughout the day. The year of the monkey is the ninth of the 12 animals in the recurring 12-year Chinese zodiac cycle. Every 12th years there is a monkey year. 2016 is the fire monkey year. Mayor Bevilacqua with Councillors & Dignitaries were in attendance along with the guests to see the day shape up. The moment the Chinese New Year arrives there is a cacophony of fireworks and firecrackers all around, even in the rural parts of China. Fireworks that sound like rocket launchers as families stay up for this joyful moment. From the 23rd of the 12th lunar month (Jan. 31st, 2016), Chinese people carry out a thorough cleaning of their houses. The cleaning is called “sweeping the dust” and represents a wish to put away old things, biding farewell to the old year, which welcomes the New Year.
