In a January 26 press release the provincial government announced it is investing $1.6-million in special projects in 10 public libraries across Ontario, three in the GTA. The grants are part of the $10-million Ontario Libraries Capacity Fund which seeks to develop special library projects that can be successfully replicated in other communities.
The Milton Public Library will receive $169,000 for the No Walls project, a virtual community hub that engages patrons through gaming and social media applications.
The Pickering Public Library will receive $175,567 for the Backpack Library Project, which aims to broaden internet access to the approximately 15 per cent of the community with no access to internet.
The Toronto Public Library will receive $200,000 for the Library Technology Services Toolkit to help library systems evaluate technology-based offerings and their impacts on communities.
