King Township councillors will be asked to approve a ban on any attempt by possible proponents of a new waste contract to lobby them.
The lobbying ban, to be presented in a report to council on Monday, comes as the 10-year waste disposal contract with the Northern Six municipalities expires in 2017.
Currently, the Northern Six, which include York Region’s smallest municipalities of Newmarket, Aurora, Georgina, East Gwillimbury, Whitchurch-Stouffville and King, are together putting out a Request For Proposal (RFP) for a new long-term waste deal.
According to the report council is to, “endorse a ban on any communications between members of council and any director, officer, employee, agent, or representative of a firm or agent of a firm with an interest in submitting a proposal for the Northern Six Waste Collection Contract.”
The ban would also apply to all King Township staff, “excluding those identified as being involved in the process.”
At the current time, proponents are preparing Requests for Proposal for the contract, which is up in September 2017.
Should King agree to a lobbying ban, it would fall in line with neighbours Aurora, Newmarket and Whitchurch-Stouffville, which already have a lobbying ban in place for the waste contract. Georgina has no policy, while East Gwillimbury has a lobby registry for this particular issue.
The RFP is expected in late spring with a successful bidder expected to be chosen in fall 2016.
