Edmonton recently became the first Canadian city to introduce bylaws to regulate and licence Uber. Locally, Kingston is taking a wait and see approach when it comes to whether it will attempt to regulate and license the popular app-based ride sharing service. Uber expanded to Kingston last November ... And is active within the city. The local taxi commission has been crying foul about Uber, whose drivers don’t have to pay the same insurance or licensing fees as cabbies. The commission wants to develop a common framework that would allow for both taxis and Uber to co-exist.
Mayor Brian Paterson:
“The fact that other municipalities have already been grappling with this issue for a while, I think that the probably plays to our advantage if in fact there are cities that have been able to come up with a framework that works. That might make our job easier here in Kingston that we can adopt similar framework.”
