The new Justin Trudeau majority Liberal government had a one-week session to pass a middle class tax-break bill last fall, but a week into its winter session, committee assignments have now been handed out.

Two local MPs it seems have found themselves on committees that fit their backgrounds and areas of expertise.

King-Vaughan Liberal MP Deb Schulte, who had a long background as an environmental activist and advocate for sustainability before she became a Vaughan regional councillor from 2010-14.

Appropriately enough, Schulte will now sit on the Standing Committee on the Environment and Sustainable Development.

Vaughan-Woodbridge Liberal MP Francesco Sorbara, who was a corporate bond research analyst with Scotiabank, has been named to the Standing Committee on Finance.

Parliamentary standing committees oversee a government department or departments These committees are charged with the review of the relevant statute law, departmental operations and expenditures, and the effectiveness of the policies and programs of the department.
