Highway 404, between Highway 407 and Stouffville Road, will get high-occupancy vehicle lanes in each direction, it was announced Dec. 9.
The project will widen the highway from six to eight lanes for about 10 kilometers and includes construction of a new 171-vehicle carpool and transit lot in the southwest quadrant of Hwy. 404 and Major Mackenzie Drive.
Two overpasses at Highway 7, widening of the 16th Avenue overpasses and replacement of the Rouge River overpasses are also part of the project.
Work is expected to begin in 2017, with completion in 2021.
The highway expansion will help commuters spend less time in gridlock and encourage economic growth in York Region, said Richmond Hill MPP Reza Moridi.
“This is great news for residents in York Region that rely on Hwy. 404 to get around the GTHA,” said Dr. Helena Jaczek, MPP for Oak Ridges-Markham. “These improvements will help commuters travel safely, while reducing travel times.”
The federal government is contributing up to $46,057,500 through the New Building Canada Fund and the Government of Ontario is covering all remaining costs of the project.
The provincial contribution will be determined once the project is tendered and awarded, according to Andrea Ernesaks, spokesperson for Transportation Minister and Vaughan MPP Steven Del Duca.
Once the contract has been awarded, the provincial portion will be disclosed publicly.
