On Nov. 5th Kleinburg Library celebrated its 50th birthday in grand fashion. The official welcome was at 1p.m. This kicked off a 60s-inspired afternoon complete with music, festive fall food & drink, hula hoops, karaoke, retro contests and more. In attendance for this birthday were: M.C. Margie Singleton, CEO, Vaughan Public Libraries; Honourable Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua; Devender Sandhu, Chair, Vaughan Public Library Board and other regional councillors. The planning for the Kleinburg Library started in 1965 and was built with funds from the federal and provincial governments as a Centennial project. Officially opened in 1966, the original building was 1,500 square feet. An extension was added in 1975 making it a split level with a basement. With infrastructure funding from the province in 2010, the building was made accessible with an elevator and accessible washroom. Renovations in 2014 included replacement of HVAC equipment, new windows, a new roof and the addition of an outside reading garden. For 50 years the Kleinburg Library has provided excellent library resources and services to enrich, inspire, and transform the citizens of Vaughan. Today, with a collection of approximately 15, 000 items, a children’s area, a program room and self-checkout, the library continues to offer a welcoming destination to the community and serve the diverse needs of Vaughan citizens.
